Root canal treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure that removes inflamed or infected pulp from inside a tooth. It is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth. The alternative to a root filling is often to remove the tooth by a tooth extraction.
Inside your tooth, beneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, which help grow the root of your tooth during its development.
When you undergo a root canal or other endodontic treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Hence, the name root filling.
A fully developed tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.
Root filling, root canal treatment and endodontic treatment are the same procedure. It’s very similar to a routine filling and can usually be completed in one or two appointments.
Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection and will continue functioning like any other tooth. A root canal is relatively painless and exceptionally high. You’ll be back to smiling, biting, and chewing quickly.
Root canals are needed for cracked teeth, deep cavities, or issues from a previous filling. The pulp (nerve) is damaged beyond recovery and needs to be removed. There are a few symptoms that mean you might need a root canal:
