Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that involves bleaching your teeth to make them whiter. While maintaining healthy teeth and gums is essential for a bright smile, it's common to seek additional help.
Over time, teeth can lose their whiteness due to the natural aging process. Additionally, habits such as smoking or consuming tea, coffee, red wine, and pigmented foods can alter the natural colour of your teeth.
Professional whitening treatments can quickly and safely improve the shade of your teeth without causing damage. Research indicates that a brighter, whiter smile enhances confidence, encourages more smiling, and makes you appear more attractive.
Teeth whitening may be an option for you if:
You'll need to have a consultation to determine your suitability for whitening treatment. If you qualify, your dentist will discuss which whitening options are best for you, along with the associated costs.
Your dentist can provide you with a teeth whitening kit that includes trays and gel to use at home. The trays should be worn as directed by your dentist, and most people wear them overnight. Achieving your desired shade of white may take a few weeks.
Home whitening may also be offered as a top-up after initial whitening at the practice, which is our preferred method. This is a safe, tested approach that can yield great results if done correctly.
Whitening products available outside of dental practices contain only 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, providing minimal active ingredients for whitening. Some over-the-counter products lack any effective whitening ingredients and instead contain harmful substances like lemon juice, citric acid, or bicarbonate soda, which can damage teeth over time.
Some sensitivity during whitening is normal; however, this can be significantly reduced with desensitising agents. We use Zoom from Philips, which includes a unique desensitiser known as ACP. Studies show that twice as many patients report no sensitivity when using NiteWhite ACP compared to those who whiten without it.
If a tooth has darkened after a root canal treatment, internal whitening may be an option. This involves re-opening the original access hole in the tooth, placing whitening gel inside, and then sealing the hole with a temporary filling. This process may need to be repeated two or three times, about a week apart. Once completed, your dentist will permanently close the hole with a tooth-coloured filling.
The tooth absorbs hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down the colour molecules, effectively whitening the tooth from the inside.
Good aftercare can help maintain the effects of professional whitening for a longer duration. To maximise the results, we recommend:
Top-up kits are also available to help maintain your new smile. Your dentist will provide guidance on caring for your smile after treatment.
